After graduating high school with a very clear goal of getting a business degree in the future, I chose the HELP matriculation centre’s Foundation in Arts, as I saw the relevance of the key subjects I would be learning, as well as saw a great opportunity to fast track my pre-university qualifications, since the program is shorter than others. What started out as a logically efficient decision, my experience throughout my time at HMC exposed me to a culture of diversity and community, where I made many friends in both the students as well as the faculty. The superbly proactive faculty that strongly encouraged extra curricular activities in addition to excelling in one’s studies made the year a truly memorable and teachable time. We were blessed with really great lecturers and tutors – I can proudly say that each one of them imparted me valuable wisdom that I’ve tapped on throughout my career.
The entire term taught me vital principles – holding steadfast to goals and values whilst leading, managing deadlines, meeting budgets, and marketing our efforts in order to encourage high turnouts and participation. The biggest takeaway was juggling academics (and achieving good grades), my social and family life, my hobbies, and my student council responsibilities (where I was the elected council president). It was a great glimpse into how life would be once I was thrusted into the workforce. I always had guidance and advice from Mr Dhanesh and the rest of the faculty, and that helped me a great deal in achieving all I have. I am happy to report that I now have 7 years experience in the Hospitality and Food & Beverage industry, with a focus on marketing and operations management, where my daily mission is to ensure each and every guest’s experience is unique, positive, and unforgettable. I am immensely thankful for HMC and my time there. The course was Foundation in Arts, but I like to think of it as Foundation in Life.
