The National Statistics Competition 2018

By Nelson Tee

The final round of the National Statistics Competition in Penang took place on 13October 2018. Statistics lecturers Nelson Tee and Ng You Ming accompanied the HMC representative, Nathan Ting Wei Jian on this two-day trip.

The journey to Penang started out smoothly, but that quickly changed as an accident involving a lorry happened and caused a massive jam. However, the little damper was quickly forgotten as soon as the road-trippers managed to get their hands on some delicious Penang delicacies. The day ended with Nathan doing some last minute revision with the help of his two statistics lecturers.

In the morning, the trio headed to USM, where the competition was held.  All but four out of fifty finalists showed up for the competition. In one hall, Nathan fought a courageous battle, putting to good use all that he had learnt in statistics classes. The lecturers, on the other hand, were ushered to a different one. The wait was definitely nerve-wrecking for the lecturers. One can only imagine how Nathan must have felt!

After that, everyone was ushered into a bigger hall for the opening ceremony. It was a privilege to be able to listen to talks given by three important figures of companies like Bosch, Canon, Le’ Born, and Department of Statistics Malaysia.

It was definitely a proud moment for Nathan and his lecturers when he was announced as the winner of a consolation prize. He has certainly made HMC proud.
